Sydney Zoo: Everything We Know About Western Sydney's Massive Zoo

For the first time in over a century, a new zoo is opening in Sydney — and it’s throwing open its doors next week. Sydney Zoo, in the city’s west in Bungarribee, has officially announced it’ll be opening on December 7.

The Western Sydney zoo will be home to more than 2000 animals including lions, cheetahs, penguins, zebras, chimpanzees, red pandas, spider monkeys, tigers and the only hyenas in Australia. Sydney Zoo will also provide a safe home for native animals like kangaroos, wombats, Tasmanian Devils, dingos, echidnas, emus and koalas.

There’ll be six exhibits at the zoo, spanning continents like Africa, Asia and Australia and diving deep under the oceans in the aquarium. There’s also a primates exhibit and a reptile and nocturnal house. You’ll even be able to get up close to the animals with special encounters and feeding sessions.

The zoo has been designed with no hills or steps, making it easily accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

Like all good zoos, it will run industry-approved breeding programs for endangered animals as well as education programs for visitors to support local and international conservation efforts. It’ll also work closely with the Darug people to run a natural heritage program called the Bungarribee Dreaming experience, where Indigenous guides will provide interpretation and information throughout the zoo.

Not content to stop there, though, Sydney Zoo wants to become the world’s finest energy-independent zoo thanks to an extensive solar power network, storm water run-off recycling program and zero-waste initiatives.

Sounds pretty great! You can check it all out for yourself with a day ticket, that also gets you free parking and access to keeper talks and shows. Tickets are only available online and start at $39.99.

But there’s another way to get into Sydney Zoo — by signing up for RunWest, a 12k fun run that travels through the zoo in March 2020.
