Feed Your Travel Cravings With This Full On African-Style Safari In Victoria
It’s (unfortunately) safe to say that a trip to Africa is off the cards anytime soon. There are many reasons why this sucks, obviously, but the unparalleled awe of taking a safari to see the country’s majestic animals is absolutely top of the list.
Ok sure, it holds a special place in my heart as a safari around South Africa‘s Madikwe was the first solo activity I did on my first ever solo travel adventure and it (clearly) sparked a whole passion for me BUT, regardless, it’s amazing.
The thing is, I was today-years-old when I found out you can actually get the next best thing and have a whole arse safari with Arica’s big animals in Victoria. Yes — Victoria, Australia.
Werribee Open Range Zoo has been hosting an immersive after-hours wildlife experience, Sunset Safari.
As the sun sets (ie. between 5.30pm and 9pm), you can ride around iconic animals like rhinoceros, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, lions and hippopotamus — all while learning about fighting wildlife extinction.
“This is the closest you can get to an authentic African Safari and there’s no plane ticket required,” said Werribee Open Range Zoo Director Glen Holland.
“Through the stories your guide shares, you will learn about the plight of species in the wild – such as Southern white rhino – and how you can join us on our journey to secure a future rich in wildlife”.

As an added bonus, proceeds from your ticket go towards helping Zoos Victoria’s international conservation partner, Rhino Fund Uganda, in their efforts to save the Southern white rhino from extinction.
Tickets cost $79 for adults, which includes your ride on a small-group safari bus, a Safari Guide, after-hours zoo access, an authentic performance of drums, song and dance. You can add on a food package too, make it a whole ‘thing’.
