Great News: The Northern Territory Will Re-Open Its Borders To Sydney Early Next Month

There is a lot to love about the Northern Territory: the rugged, wild landscape, the red earth, the epic events and more. There’s about to be even more  reason to love it, seeing as it’s looking like they’ll be re-opening their borders to Sydney from October 9.

NT’s Chief Minister Michael Gunner made the announcement that Sydney will be allowed to travel to the territory again, provided that the city maintains their steady downward trend of COVID-19 cases. So bloody do the right thing everyone, I need this!

“This morning, Dr (Hugh) Heggie advised he’s now satisfied with the progress that’s been made in Sydney to recommend a change to their hot spot status,” Gunner told media at a Darwin press conference.

“The Northern Territory will plan to remove the hot spot status declaration for Greater Sydney in 28 days’ time… From Friday, October 9, arrivals from Greater Sydney will not need to undertake 14 days of supervised quarantine,” he continued.

Gunner also said it was the continued diligence of the New South Wales contact tracing team and seven days straight of 10 or less cases have all added to the decision to re-open the borders and stop classifying Sydney as a hot spot.

Meanwhile, while Gunner stated that the decreasing number of cases in Victoria was “encouraging”, they still had a long way to go before the Top End would let them back in.

“Victoria will continue to be a hot spot for the purposes of travel to the Northern Territory,” he said.

If you’re wondering where you can and can’t go at the moment, no matter what state you’re currently residing in, here’s a handy guide we’ve been updating as the news does. You’re welcome.

Here’s hoping the rest of the country follows the NT lead — we travel junkies are jonesing.
