‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ Will Become A Broadway Spectacular In 2019

Moulin Rouge! the musical

If you’ve ever watched the original Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris and went in with expectations based on the Baz Luhrmann film, you probably had a rude awakening. “Where are Satine and Christian? Why is everyone topless? Why is nobody singing Lady Marmalade?”

Indeed, the dazzling-yet-dated French cabaret is quite different from the 1900s elegance captured in the film. But if you’re dying to see the Baz’s version come to life on the big stage, you’re in luck, because Moulin Rouge! The Musical is set to become a Broadway spectacular, spectacular in 2019.

The lavish musical actually debuted in Boston this year, but is set to hit Broadway in June next year. Moulin Rouge! The Musical tells the story of doomed lovers Satine and Christian and features music from the original film, as well as two new pop songs. The set design and costumes appear to be suitably spectacular, featuring all the scarlet-tinted glamour we know and love from the movie.

The musical is directed by by two-time Tony nominee Alex Timbers — who also has a Golden Globe thanks to co-creating the TV series Mozart in the Jungle — with music by his frequent collaborator Justin Levine. Aaron Tveit  (diehard fans may recognise him as Nate’s cousin Trip in Gossip Girl) will continue in the role of Christian, while Tony Award–winner Karen Olivo steps into Satine’s stilettos.

It sounds like Baz approves of the Broadway adaption. “It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm,” he said in a statement.

Here’s hoping the musical heads down under soon (it is, after all, an Aussie film) but in the meantime, a trip to New York may be in order. Tickets for the Broadway run go on sale at 10am on Monday, December 3 (US time), and you can sign up for updates here.
