Gelato Messina Is Giving Away 1,000 Free Scoops This Weekend

Say ‘Gelato Messina ice cream truck’, and you have our attention. Add the word ‘free’, and you have our guaranteed attendance.

This Saturday March 7, the dons of dessert are giving away 1,000 free scoops of gelato to support local business. That’s right, the company’s vintage ice cream truck is pulling into Burwood Chinatown for a Messina Ice Cream Party.

The complimentary scoops are available at the Clarendon Place precinct from 4pm to 7pm, or until all the tubs are empty. (Translation: get there at 4pm.)

You can choose from famous Messina flavours like pandan & coconut, milk choc with choc peanut fudge, boysenberry and cookies & cream. Vegan, gluten-free and sorbet options will also be available. And yes, it’s limited to one scoop per person.

So why the Free Ice Cream Party? Gelato Messina has decided to throw its support behind Burwood’s local businesses at a tough time.

The Burwood Chinatown precinct, which features over 30 hawker-style eateries serving delicious street food, has experienced a recent drop in visitors. As in other Asian food destinations around Sydney, the downturn is the result of fear surrounding the coronavirus crisis.

A campaign to combat coronavirus misinformation is now circulating with the hashtag #IWillEatWithYou. GetUp is leading the charge locally, encouraging all Australians to support family businesses and restaurants suffering from a loss in patronage.

“While other restaurants and public spaces are still buzzing, it is the Chinatown restaurants and Asian grocers that stand empty,” the appeal reads. “Panic around the virus is unfairly impacting Chinese and Asian communities…If we don’t take action – people will lose their jobs, and their livelihoods.”

In addition to free Messina, the Burwood Chinatown event will feature a jumping castle and face-painting for kids. Not to mention, of course, all the bao, handmade noodles, dumplings and dim sum you can afford. Truly, a blessed day.
