Black Star Pastry: World's Most Instagrammed Cake Coming To Melbourne

Black Star Pastry is either renowned or infamous, depending on how many times your #healthyeating streak has crumbled to one of the bakery’s incredible cakes. It’s been a strictly Sydney-only experience, but now the bakery is opening a pop-up in Melbourne, and bringing its signature Strawberry Watermelon Cake with it.

Named by the New York Times as the “world’s most Instagrammed cake“, the Strawberry Watermelon Cake layers almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream and watermelon and tops the whole thing with fresh strawberries, pistachios and dried rose petals.

Coles mud cake doesn’t have anything on that.

The pop-up sprung open yesterday, and it’ll be serving Melburnians delicious treats until Easter 2020. Obviously the Strawberry Watermelon Cake is the star of the show, but Black Star is also bringing a bunch of other cakes to the city.

You’ll be able to get your hands on fresh slices of the Raspberry Lychee Cake, with layers of raspberry marshmallow and vanilla cream built on a rich chocolate biscuit base, and the Pistachio Lemon Zen Cake, made from layers of pistachio ganache, white chocolate mousse, lemon curd and crunchy pistachio dacquoise.

Pioneers of specialty coffee in Melbourne, ST. ALI will be on board, and when Easter rolls around next year the temporary store will also be selling Black Star’s famous Hot X Buns, which we praised for being “fluffier than a baby duck looks”.

“We’re particularly excited to open on Acland Street — an address synonymous with incredible cakes — and add another flavour to the broad tourist appeal of this storied beachside suburb,” said Black Star Pastry General Manager, Josef Murray.

You can find the Black Star Pastry Melbourne pop-up at 2c Acland Street, St Kilda every Monday to Friday from 7am to 4pm, and weekends from 8am to 5pm.

Seriously, one million slices of the Strawberry Watermelon Cake are served each year in Sydney. Don’t sleep on this, Melbourne!
