$1 Houses In Italy: Bivona Is The Next Town Selling Cheap Houses In Italy

Sometimes more is less, like when you eat an entire block of chocolate in one sitting and ruin it for yourself for a week. But please, bury me in the absolute deluge of gorgeous Italian towns that are selling houses for $1. Bivona in Sicily is the latest spot trying to lure in new residences for the price of a shiny dollar coin and let me tell you, it’s working.

The town, nestled deep in the heart of Sicily, is offering a dozen $1 properties to newcomers. Like in all the other Italian communes offering a similar deal, buyers will be expected to renovate the house on their own dime. But Bivona is charging a lower deposit, offering buyers tax bonuses and extending the mandatory renovation period to lure new residents away from the other towns.

On top of their $1 (really €1, which is about AU$1.62), buyers will have to pay a $2750 deposit, which is almost half the price of other deposits on these cheap Italian houses. After that, they’ll have a leisurely four years to restore their house to its former glory.

Residents hope the incentive will help restore Bivona to its prime. “We want to recover the lost grandeur of our greatest time in history, back in the Renaissance, when 8000 people lived in Bivona and it was a flourishing feudal duchy blessed by Emperor Charles V,” Angela Cannizzaro, Bivona’s culture councilor told CNN Travel.

Anyone who takes the deal with find a historic town full of welcoming locals, with fresh mountain air, pristine rivers, lush forests and abundant fruit orchards. “Life quality is good, it’s an optimal place to detox,” said Mayor Milko Cinà. “There’s no smog, no noise, just pure nature and a great panorama.”

The houses for sale will be posted on Bivona’s website soon, and potential buyers can register their interest by emailing [email protected].
