What is it? Gumbo – a delightful home-style stew found in the southern US states that’s packed with flavour as it is with delicious ingredients.
Where can you get it? A staple amongst Louisiana and New Orleans cuisine, arguably the best can be found at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in New Orleans.
What’s in it? Gumbo, in its purest form, is a seasoned soup or stew that uses several varieties of meat. Common meat varieties are seafood gumbo, and meat gumbos that can use a mixture of sausage, ham, chicken, duck, squirrel, or rabbit. It’s seasoned using a thick sauce or gravy and is often served with onions, parsley, bell pepper, celery and can be served over rice.
Is it good for you? It’s okay. It’s a hearty meal best served in winter – it’ll keep you warm and content ’til the sun shines again.
How much does it cost? A cup of creole gumbo at Dooky Chase will set you back around $7.95 USD ($11 AUD) and for what they claim is the best in the country, it’s worth every penny.
