You’ve Gotta Eat This: Churrascaria

Have you ever tasted something so delicious, so mind-bogglingly awesome that you immediately wanted to tell everyone you know about it? You’re not alone. Getting to taste unique offerings from around the world is probably the best part of travel, so there’s no shame in planning a whole trip around one special-looking dish, is there? Because you know in your heart of hearts that you’ve just gotta eat this.

What is it? So churrascaria isn’t exactly the food itself, it’s a place where meat is cooked churrasco style – which can be roughly translated from Portuguese as ‘barbecue’.

How does it work? At your local churrascaria, passadores (meat waiters) come around to your table with knives and a giant skewer. On said skewer are various kinds of meat, cooked to perfection rotisserie-style. Think beef, pork, filet mignon, lamb, chicken, duck, ham, sausage, fish and really any other cut of meal you can imagine. Grilled pineapple too!

Where can you get it? It’s a specialty in Brazil, where the churrasco is often roasted with charcoal. You can also find churrascaria’s in Portugal, the US and even in Australia.

Arguably the best churrascaria is Rio de Janeiro’s Churrascaria Palace, an upscale buffet serving the most decadent and tasty meat you will ever try. It’s pricey, but so worth it.

Is it good for you? Meat is great! But expect your portions to go haywire as waiters continue to bring you skewer after skewer of delicious meat and it gets harder and harder to say no to.
