Have you ever tasted something so delicious, so mind-bogglingly awesome that you immediately wanted to tell everyone you know about it? You’re not alone. Getting to taste unique offerings from around the world is probably the best part of travel, so there’s no shame in planning a whole trip around one special-looking dish, is there? Because you know in your heart of hearts that you’ve just gotta eat this.
What is it? A gargantuan version of everyone’s favourite dumpling, the xiao long bao.
Where can you get it? Hot spots in Shanghai, China, New York and LA have them, but you can now get your fix without the jet lag at Din Tai Fung, a Taiwanese dumpling chain in Melbourne and Sydney.
What’s in it? This mega dumpling uses tender pork and prawn mince, ginger and a signature savoury soup, and encases it in silky soft dumpling wrappers. To get to the broth, diners must gently puncture the dough with a straw and sip it up. Don’t be shy.
Is it good for you? A single serve of Din Tai Fung’s xiao long bao is seven times (!) the normal size of a regular soup dumpling, so I guess it’s just like eating seven little dumplings in one.
How much does it cost? $8.90 each, straw included.
