February is without a doubt the best month on the west coast calendar with a plethora of frenzied and feverish festivals rolling into P-town to inject a fusion of fun and fervour into the streets.
[listicle]Perth International Arts Festival
‘Plan your big, bold adventure’ is the motto of this year’s Perth International Arts Festival and going by the program, it looks as though it’s going to be a journey of epic proportions. Listen to the ambitious cinematic sounds of US juggernauts Explosions in the Sky at the Chevron Festival Gardens, watch the masterful and daring Nouveau Cirque du Vietnam makes its Australian debut, journey deep into the Amazon in ‘The Encounter’, an immersive theatre experience, and explore big ideas and catch some of your favourite writers at the simultaneously held Perth Writers Festival. PIAF runs from February 10 to March 5.

Sculpture at Bathers
An army of striking sculptures and installations will soon take over the foreshore of Bathers Beach and the Kidogo Arthouse for the Sculpture at Bathers art exhibition. This community event, held every two years, is dedicated to celebrating local Western Australian sculptors (its sister event at Cottesloe Beach also exhibits international artists) and is a testimony to the huge array of talent that our vast state has to offer. For once, it won’t be the Freo doctor that will have you blown away. Sculpture at Bathers returns to Bathers Beach on February 25 and runs until March 12.
Castaway Festival
Hot tip: if you’re ever going to be stranded on an island, make sure it’s one that is hosting a summer soiree… which is exactly what’s happening on longtime favourite Rottnest Island. Castaway Festival returns for yet another island rendezvous on February 12 bringing along a cool cast of characters for the ultimate beach bash. Previous year’s line-ups have included the likes of Peking Duck and Sticky Fingers, and this year’s bill doesn’t disappoint with indie-dance stalwart Rüfüs and electronic artist and producer The Kite String Tangle set to get those island party vibes going.

Dome Date Night
If you’re still scrounging around for ideas on what to do for Valentine’s Day, why not impress your significant other/better half by taking them on a journey through the cosmos? Enjoy the ultimate Dome Date Night and get set to explore the wonders of the universe at SciTech Planetarium, which includes a tour of the night sky and a feature film with complimentary beverage. Don’t be surprised if you see some heavenly bodies along the way!
Jagged Little Pill Singalong
Oh the ’90s: the decade of the discman, dial-up internet and those Dawson river kids. It was also the decade of Alanis Morissette whose angsty teen anthems ensured that a generation of kids would grow up to know the real irony of there being no irony in the cult 90s song ‘Ironic’. Alanis’s angst-ridden spirit returns in the tribute show that you’ve been waiting all your life—well, at least, since you were about 14 – with the whole ‘Jagged Little Pill’ album being performed in its entirety. Come along, sing along, prepare to high-five with your fellow 90s counterparts and don’t even pretend you don’t know ALL OF THE WORDS. Jagged Little Pill Singalong runs from February 14 to 19 as part of the Fringe Festival at the Noodle Palace.
Laneway Festival
Hot off the heels of the first Falls Festival held in Fremantle, gig groupies are once again descending on the port city for another epic Australian music festival: Laneway. This year’s line-up is dynamite and includes the likes of Aurora, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Nick Murphy (Chet Faker) and Tourist, among many others, set to dazzle fans with their explosive tunes onstage. Fittingly, the festival will be wrapped up by local outfit and indie kings Tame Impala playing in their own backyard.
Summerset Arts Festival
The Summerset Arts Festival is back, which means that there is a bounty of events heading to babin’ Scarborough Beach. From burlesque shows to comedy skits, circus acts to floral workshops, hypnotists to laughter yoga, there’s plenty to keep sandy beachgoers entertained after a dip in the sparkling Indian Ocean. Don’t forget to cap off a show with some bevvies at the Sunset Veranda. The Summerset Arts Festival runs from January 20 to February 5.
