Australia’s Best American-Style Restaurants For Celebrating The Fourth Of July

Ah, America. Land of the free, home of the deep-fried cheese doughnut covered in Cheetos dust. Today is the fourth of July in the States: A national holiday on which Americans celebrate their country, including their very good food.

Us Australians are positively obsessed with burgers, fries, onion rings and African-American soul food (basically, anything you can deep fry, smoke or cover with cheese). In fact, it seems we’re so obsessed with North-American comfort foods that rib-joints and burger places are popping up on every corner.

In the interests of solidarity (and a decent excuse to chow down on fried goods), here’s our round-up of the best American-style restaurants across the country.

Sydney

Surly’s, Surry Hills: Great mac-and-cheese, brisket trays and a American dive-bar feel. You may not be in Kansas anymore, but it’ll feel like you are.

Hartsyard, Newtown: This is American food for fancier palates, but down and out burger grease monkeys will be happy too.

Doughbox Diner, Newtown: For a very classic, all-American diner vibe, Doughbox is the place to go. Not only will you feel you’ve truly paid homage to “traditional” American cuisine with burgers, wings and onion rings, it’s a legit step back to the ’50s.

Bucket List, Bondi Beach: To celebrate America’s national day, Bucket List are selling buckets of their delicious fried chicken all day. Hells yes.

Melbourne

The Beaufort, Carlton: This one’s a shout out to vegos who feel neglected by meat-centric American-style restaurants. The Beaufort has vegan ribs and a hickory-smoked pulled mushroom burger, among the meaty eats. (For the record, vegos can head to Smith & Deli for entirely vegan American food, too.)

Meat Mother, Richmond: From the vego friendly, to the decidedly not. Meat Mother’s intentions are in its name: meat, meat and more meat.

Shawcross Pizza, Fitzroy: Don’t forget pizza! Shawcross do giant New York-style slices that’ll make you feel confident enough to ride the subway right after.

Brisbane

The Smoke BBQ, New Farm: All barbecued meats at this New Farm institution are cooked in an imported American smoker, so you know they’re the real deal.

Greaser, Fortitude Valley: It’s a secret bar, and it’s got buttermilk chicken. While that’s probably all the info you need, they’re also throwing a fourth of July celebration, so it’s a good night, guaranteed.

Carolina Kitchen, Fortitude Valley: Visit Carolina Kitchen’s new location and chow down on some of the best soul food in Brisbane while you’re at it. Aunty Lily Mae’s baby back ribs and an American soda, please.

Adelaide

Nordburger: You can’t look past this SA institution when searching for American fare in Adelaide. With Norwood, Hindmarsh and Frewville to choose from now, there’s no excuse not to pick up some of that secret-recipe buttermilk-fried chicken.

The Curious Squire, North Adelaide: This James Squire bar has all the standard American fare like soul food and burgers, with an excellent dessert menu to boot. Go full American with the deep-fried Oreo stack. Make us proud.

Jack Ruby, Adelaide CBD: This underground bar has Philly cheese steaks, mac-and-cheese balls, poutine and a bunch of other aptly named burgers (like the Edna Krabapple crab burger). Good luck choosing what you want.

Perth

Old Faithful Bar & BBQ, Perth CBD: Perth’s original and (possibly) best soul food BBQ joint is hosting a fourth of July celebration. Expect beers and beef aplenty!

Public House, Perth CBD: American soul food with a distinctly South American twist. Check out the sticky Pedro Ximinez lamb shoulder and Peruvian fried chicken burger. Mmmm.

Mack Daddy’s, Mount Lawley: Another New York-style pizza joint, Mack Daddy’s even delivers for those who don’t want to celebrate but can’t be bothered to leave the house.

Now go forth and gorge yourself on delicious meats and burgers. Oh, and don’t forget to have a slice of apple pie and ice-cream afterwards.
