Harry Potter fever is everywhere right now, from books and films, to even real estate. With the 20th anniversary of the beloved series upon us (it’s crazy, right?) some people are not only reminiscing about J.K. Rowling’s wonderful stories, but are dreaming about what it would actually be like to live within them.
As much as any of us would give anything for a wand and the powers that Harry, Ron and Hermione learned at Hogwarts, it’s not exactly a reality. However, there’s nothing stopping us from pretending, whether that means exploring an escape room, visiting the real Forbidden Forest, or trying some real life butterbeer.
If that’s not enough, how does living in Hogwarts sound? There are a plethora of castles that not only evoke a magical, Hogwarts feel, but are for sale right now – and here’s a few of the best ones, thanks to Home & Property.
Vanbrugh Castle, England
Cost: £2.5 million ($4.3 million AUD)
OK, so you can’t buy the entire thing, but a large wing is available in this gorgeous castle, located between Blackheath and Greenwich, adjacent to the Royal Park. First built in 1718, the castle is stated within grounds stretching 2.5 acres, and includes four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a huge reception area and roof terrace, offering incredible views over London. For something extra magical, there’s even an underground bedroom beneath the garden with a “private annex” which also includes a kitchenette and bathroom.
Rothes Glen House, Banffshire, Scotland
Cost: £1.1 million ($1.86 million AUD)
This historical 11 bedroom stunner is situated in the heart of Spey Valley, known for salmon fishing, whiskey and the beautiful natural landscape. You’ll feel like a real wizard in these incredible surrounds (including a 13th century cathedral and boarding school right nearby). Who knows, maybe the nearby distilleries will even produce butterbeer!
Tuscan Castle, Sienna, Italy
Cost: €35 million ($52 million AUD)
So this one doesn’t exactly come cheap, but my goodness it is beautiful. If you’re going to find magic, chances are you’ll find it within a property this stunning – especially considering some of the shrubbery within the 5000 acre land is actually medicinal. First built back in 1135, the medieval castle has been fully restored, along with two adjacent villas.
Craigcrook Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Cost: £6 million ($10.2 million AUD)
Nothing says magical castle like turrets, and this 16th century castle has plenty. Surrounded by its very own Forbidden Forest, this three storey, five bedroom castle offers a lavish lifestyle in serious classic style, including cloakrooms, a gatehouse and more. Literary heroes like Charles Dickens and Alfred Lord Tennyson have previously called the castle home, but the best part? It’s less than 5 km away from Edinburgh, meaning you wont even need your broom to visit the muggle city centre.
Place du Coteau, Quebec, Canada
Price: CAN$2.7 million ($2.7 million AUD)
You don’t even need to be in England, or Europe for that matter, to feel like you’re living in Hogwarts. This incredible Canadian castle is situated at the top of a mountain, offering incredible views of Montreal below. On top of the three bedrooms and three bathrooms, you’ll find four fully operational fireplaces, plenty of balconies and turrets, and extra high ceilings – perfect for practising those flying spells.
Rennes, Brittany, France
Price: €1.6 million ($2.4 million AUD)
This amazing French castle features 10 bedrooms, a sauna, heated pool and more, but the surrounds are what make it extra magical: you’ve got your own special forest, two lakes (that may or may not be home to merpeople), and even an orangery to grown your own oranges (or mandrakes).
Castle Pines Village, Colorado, US
Price: USD$2 million ($2.6 million AUD)
Not to be left out, the US also has plenty to offer for those who want to pretend there living in Hogwarts. This beautiful seven-bedroom castle is stated in Colorado, and is perfect for the more active wizards, offering a fitness centre, swimming pools, sports courts, a playground and more – perhaps even a Quidditch pitch.
Brentwood Manor, Greenwich, Connecticut, US
Price: US$8.5 million ($11 million AUD)
This lavish Connecticut castle is set among a sprawling 12 acre slice of countryside. There’s a large library, a terrace specifically for watching sunsets, eight – yes, eight – fireplaces, chandeliers, a tennis court, full wine cellar and a garage that fits seven cars, or two dragons.
