A Critically Acclaimed, 9/11-Themed Broadway Musical Is Coming To Sydney

Come From Away Sydney

The next in a stream of Broadway musical hits is confirmed for Sydney: Come From Away will be the next major production to take to a Sydney stage, and it’s coming this year.

The hit musical is based on actual events that occurred around the September 11 attacks. If you’re not familiar with the story of the musical you may be thinking, “Wait, a 9/11 musical?” Well yes, that’s true, but it’s also not accurate.

The musical, which has won a whole heap of theatre awards in the United States and the UK, tells the story of a small town that was inundated by redirected planes shortly after the September 11 attacks. The small Canadian town of Gander in Newfoundland, was suddenly the temporary home of 38 plane loads of passengers – that’s 7000 air passengers flooding into a town of only 12,000 people. The musical delves into the stories of real passengers and locals, and how people can come together in a time of crisis.

The show has had a successful run in Melbourne since July 2019, and will arrive in Sydney’s State Theatre in August this year. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday February 6. Find out more at the show’s website.

Melbourne and Sydney are in for a great couple of years when it comes to the stage, with some incredible shows finally hitting our shores. Moulin Rouge! The Musical will land in Melbourne and Sydney’s getting Hamilton, both next year. Frozen The Musical will come to Sydney in July this year. For those willing to travel, there are musicals in the works about both Mrs Doubtfire and Princess Diana – surely to make a stage debut in Australia soon after their Broadway runs launch.
