10 Of The Best Sydney Joints For Margs, Tacos And Tunes This Cinco De Mayo
Happy Cinco de Mayo week! The history behind the day (that literally translates to ‘Fifth of May’) is to celebrate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla –and more broadly, Mexican culture. Nothing says ‘celebrate’ more than enjoying good deals on tasty margaritas.
We’ve rounded up some of the best Sydney venues to pour one out for Cinco de Mayo.
#1 El Loco Slip Inn
From May 3 to 8 select Merivale venues will be celebrating with $12 classic margaritas, but El Loco is taking the party further. They’ll have the $12 margs for the whole month of May, as well as a live five-piece Mariachi band on May 7.
#2 Maiz Street Food
Chow down on authentic Mexican street food at Maiz, in Newtown. They run an all-day brunch from 8am until 2:30pm, with dishes all about the corn.
#3 Cantina OK!
What better place to celebrate with margaritas than number 28 on the World’s 50 Best Bars. Cantina OK! is a small Mezcal bara, stocked with a range of hand-sourced, hand-imported, handmade agave spirits.
#4 Esteban
As the newest offering from the team behind Tequila Mockingbird, Estaban is the moody, underground Mexican bar and restaurant you never knew you needed. They’re having a tacos and margs night on May 5 to celebrate, with an exclusive taco flavour specially made.
#5 Sonora
Look I’m a fan of the bottomless brunch, especially when it’s for unlimited tacos and margaritas (plus Tecate beers and rosé) at Sonora. The food is inspired by the “thriving restaurant scene in Mexico City’s cool neighbourhoods of Roma and Condesa” and deliciously authentic.
#6 Tio’s Cerveceria
Already a local favourite in Surry Hills, Tio’s has a particularly happy hour every day with $5 drinks and complimentary bags of their spiced popcorn — a perfect start to Cinco de Mayo.
#7 Taco Burrito Mexican Cantina
For those out West, the aptly named Taco Burrito have perfected authentic Mexican (and slow cooked meats, although they cater for all diets).
#8 Mejico

I still dream about the fancy corn on a cob at Mejico. They’ll be serving $45 Margarita Jugs and non-stop food specials including their DIY Taco Board for just $29 all Cinco de Mayo long.
#9 Bad Hombres
Vegans probably already know about the 100 percent meat-free Mexican menu of Bad Hombres in Surry Hills and Bondi. They’re also accepting Dine & Discover vouchers, just saying.
#10 Carbón Mexican Woodfire
For a little twist on your Mexican feast, Carbón (meaning ‘charcoal’ in Spanish) focuses on wood-fired dishes inspired by Mexico’s Caribbean coast using traditional grilling techniques.
#11 Mad Mex
Ok hear me out, it’s been raining so you may not want to leave the house. So just get Mad Mex delivered to your door, and their one kilo ‘Big Burrito’ is back, so one feed should last you all day.
