Melbourne Has Been Named A Near-Perfect City
Ask any Melburnian and they’ll tell you they live in the best city in the world. But sometimes it’s nice to have some validation. For the fifth year running, Melbourne has topped Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU’s) list of the world’s most liveable cities, ahead of Vienna, Vancouver and Toronto. As for how other Aussie cities fared, Adelaide tied with Calgary for fifth, while Sydney and Perth came in at seventh and eight, respectively. Brisbane managed a respectable 18th.
About 140 countries were ranked out of 100 in five categories – stability, healthcare, education, culture, infrastructure and the environment – with Melbourne scoring a near-perfect 97.5. At the other end of the scale, Damascus in war-torn Syria was ranked as the world’s least livable.

The EIU’S list isn’t just about bragging right, however. According to The Age, the report is used by multinational companies to work out relocation fees for employees that shift cities for work.
Feel like you’ve read all this before? Well, you kinda have. The EIU’s livability survey follows a similar report by the folks at Monocle magazine which named Tokyo at #1. The city was praised by the London-based journal for its “defining paradox of heart-stopping size and concurrent feeling of peace and quiet”. Melbourne was placed at #4.
