What is it? A delicious breakfast dish that’s believed to have Algerian or Tunisian origin. Shakshuka is traditionally served in a cast iron pan with bread to mop up the sauce.

Where can you get it? It’s popping up here and there on your modern brunch menu, but the authentic stuff is a staple amongst Tunisian, Libyan, Algerian, Moroccan and Egyptian cuisines.

What’s in it? Poached eggs in a sauce of tomatoes, chilli peppers, onions and spiced with cumin. Some versions include cheese, hot peppers, paprika and chorizo.

Is it good for you? It’s not too bad at all.

How much does it cost? Sadly this can cost you up to $17 at an upmarket restaurant, but because it’s such a staple among various cuisines, get on to your friend’s mum’s radar and she’ll surely make it for you for next to nothing. Or get all Masterchef and make your own.
