Tokyo Has A Bus That Rescues Tipsy Commuters Who Miss Their Stops

Tokyo's Nesugoshi Kyusai bus

We’ve all been there: Rested our eyes for a split second after a one too many shandies and woken up to find we’ve missed our stop on the last train home. Hell, you don’t even have to have been drinking for it to happen.

In Tokyo, however, it’s no big deal: The Nishi Tokyo Bus Company operates the Nesugoshi Kyusai bus – AKA the “Oversleeping Rescue Bus” – and it does pretty much what it says on the can. That is, it rescues tipsy commuters who’ve missed their stops and ensures they get home safely.

Established in 2014, the Rescue Bus was the brainchild of one of the company’s drivers. On Friday evenings in December (AKA party season), it meets the rag-tag group of commuters at the end of the Chuo line and drops them back at Hachioji Station. It’s helped 75 hapless commuters in the past 12 months alone.

If you happen to find yourself stranded on a night out in Tokyo, a trip on the Rescue Bus will set you back around $10 (Y880). As always, stay safe when you’re in a new city.
