The 7 Best Things To Do In Perth This August

Only one month of winter left until Perth comes out of hibernation! Until then, here are some events to keep you preoccupied.

Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival at Luna

Whether you’re a zealous Hitchcock fan or only know his cult-classic films through pop culture, the Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival is your opportunity to become (re-)acquainted with 11 classics from this masterful and influential filmmaker. Watch the infamous shower scene in Psycho that paved the way for slasher films, or try and overcome your ornithophobia by sitting through The Birds (warning: this may actually increase your fear). The Alfred Hitchcock Film Festival runs from July 28 to August 10 at the Windsor Cinema.

Paper Mountain Art Auction

art

Come support Paper Mountain’s third annual fundraising auction, which features works by some of Perth’s most exciting artists. Works span across the artistic spectrum ranging from prints and paintings through to sculptures and garments. Choose the piece that speaks to your artistic sensibilities the most and place a silent bid – you may walk away at the end of the night with the first piece of your budding art collection. The auction night takes places on Friday August 5 from 6 to 9pm and the preview and early bidding opens on August 4 from 9.30am to 7pm.

RTRFM Radiothon Party

Pencil this one in your calendars, folks: the RTRFM Radiothon Party has rolled around again and will be taking place this year on Saturday August 13. The Radiothon Party is the ‘headliner’ for RTRFM’s annual subscriber drive that runs from August 12–21 and will see 20 local acts performing across four Northbridge venues: The Bird, Ezra Pound, the State Theatre Centre and Studio Underground. Come for the awesome live music and guaranteed shenanigans.

If you subscribe to RTRFM during the Radiothon, you also have the opportunity to win double passes to the best Perth music festivals including Southbound, Camp Doogs and St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Sounds like a mighty fine incentive to us.

Perth Makers Market

market

The Perth Makers Market takes place every couple of months with the next market scheduled for Sunday August 7. Since launching at the beginning of the year, the market, which only features local handmade crafters, has already grown to over 100 local stallholders who are enthusiastic about showcasing their talent and handcrafted wares spanning fashion and accessories through to sculptors and painters. The markets take place in the idyllic locale of the Heathcote Cultural Precinct in Applecross from 9.30am to 3.30pm, making this an ideal Sunday morning activity.

A 22-Inch Pizza Challenge for charity

Pizza-Challenge---1080px---plain

There’s a new New York-style pizza place on the Perth scene and the masses are excited – so excited in fact that they ran out of cheese on their opening weekend – all 120 kilograms of it. Mack Daddy’s is also the only pizza joint in town where you can order a 22-inch pizza – cue the 22-inch pizza challenge. The best part? It’s all for charity.

Mack Daddy’s has teamed up with Feedmee App to host the event, which aims to raise awareness of Australia’s stark hunger crisis. Two teams will have three minutes to finish the massive 22-inch pizza. If they’re successful, Feedmee App will donate 100 meals to people in need through the help of OzHarvest.

Elizabeth Quay floating boat bar

boat

Heads up, Perth: Elizabeth Quay now has its very own floating boat bar. Bring in the weekend by combining Friday night drinks and gorgeous scenery while cruising around on the stunning Swan River on board a bar with a fully licensed bar. Stay on for a single trip or stay on board the entire night: whatever floats your boat (see what I did there?). The boat departs from Pier 4 on Barrack Street Jetty every 30 minutes on Friday evenings.

Glow Yoga

yoga

What’s better than yoga? GLOW YOGA. Yep, and we’re not just talking about inner glow either. We’re talking about glow-in-the-dark, fluro kind of yoga – this might not be one for those happy to fade into the background. Taught by the instructors of boutique yoga studio Yoga Vine, Glow Yoga takes place on Fridays throughout August in the Perth Concert Hall’s underground tunnel from 12.15 to 1 pm making this the perfect lunchtime workout. Prepare to enthral your co-workers afterwards with tales of downward dog with a fluro difference.
