October is one of the best months to pay a visit to the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, located right in the heart of the CBD. Comprising a number of curated gardens and sprawling lawns, it’s an ideal spot for a lazy picnic in the sunshine or a family day out. The International Rose Garden will be in full-bloom throughout spring, with more than 5000 rose varieties on display. Also worth a look is the Garden of Health – containing 2500 plants used in healing and wellbeing in western and non-western cultures – and the fascinating Cactus and Succulent Garden.

How can you improve on a spring day, sipping great wine at one of Australia’s most progressive (and beautiful) cellar doors? Easy – just add dogs. Alpha Box & Dice have a reputation for throwing truly awesome parties, and this time your four-legged friends are on the guest list. Head south to McLaren Vale (about a 45 minute drive from the city) for AB&D’s “Doge Day Afternoon” on Monday October 3. Featuring delicious wine, food and special guests from Greyhound Adoption Program SA. All dogs must be kept on their leash, and on their best behaviour.

The Adelaide Fashion Festival presents A Night Of Fashion At The Art Gallery – one of the feature events in the festival’s calendar. Australia’s most contemporary designers (Dion Lee, Strateas Carlucci, Carla Zampatti and more) take to the catwalk to showcase their Spring/Summer collections against the backdrop of one of Adelaide’s most iconic institutions on Saturday October 22. Victoria Square – in the very centre of Adelaide – is turning into a Bohemian village of artists and makers for one of the city’s most chillaxed arts markets. The Victoria Square Arts Market 2016 promotes very a very laid-back vibe. There will be DJs, food, coffee and a dedicated Kid Zone alongside vendors from across the state.
