Crack Open The Rosé, Opera In The Domain Is Back For Another Year

Need an injection of highbrow, yet still rosé-appropriate, culture after an excessive Christmas break? We feel you.

This Saturday January 18, Mazda Opera In The Domain returns to Sydney for a stirring start to 2020. (The tradition dates back to 1982.) That means thousands of Sydneysiders descending on the expansive lawns of the Domain with Eskys and picnic baskets in tow.

It goes down in the same spot as Sydney’s New Year’s Day institution Field Day, but expect a slightly different musical vibe from headliners like Disclosure and Skepta.

This night is about opera’s most famous arias sung by a line-up of Australia’s best.

It’s all backed by the esteemed Opera Australia Orchestra, with the added ambience of stars and bats soaring overhead. Christopher Lawrence, your aunt’s favourite voice from ABC Classic FM, is hosting.

So what to expect if it’s your first Opera In The Domain? The night is split into two parts, with featured singers including baritone José Carbó, mezzo-soprano Anna Dowsley, tenor Simon Kim and soprano Natalie Aroyan.

The assembled talent will perform famous arias from the likes of La Bohème, La Traviata, Tosca and Aida. The night’s final performance, by Simon Kim, comes from Turandot. Memorise the program now to weird out your friends.

So, that’s the culture part covered. You might also care to know the event is BYO alcohol. However, glass is not permitted, so you’ll have to decant those bottles of rosé. The site is equipped with bars and food if you’re not the picnic-packing type.

Opera In The Domain is a rain-or-shine event, so plan accordingly for the elements. It’s hard to fully enjoy an aria if you forgot your poncho.
