This is the year of many things, but if I may point out a silver lining, it’s definitely the year of finally exploring our own backyard (don’t lie, you kept putting it off like I did).
Now that most Australian borders are starting to open up for national travel (check our guide for Australia re-opening, if you’re confused), if you haven’t already started planning your bucket list now is the time.
You could absolutely do it yourself, but you’d be forgiven if 2020 had thrown enough at you and you’d rather just chill and let someone do all the organisation for you — you know, have your cake and eat it too.
If that’s feeling like your jam, you’ll be pleased to know Intrepid Travel have moved their sights domestically, starting a whole new collection of tours called Intrepid Local. Starting in Australia, New Zealand and Europe, there are over 75 multi-day yours to get yourself on, plus day tours in over 200 cities.
“Intrepid Local is our way of bringing over 30 years of experience closer to home,” said Sarah Clark, Managing Director of APAC and Global Project Lead for Intrepid Local.
“We wanted to create a product range for locals by locals, that would not only bring travellers back together after months of isolation, but also give them a way to support their own communities and businesses rebounding from the pandemic”.
Of these experiences, some will be slightly different to what you may be used to from Intrepid, focusing on slow travel that aims to really explore one location. Think small boutique properties, glamping, local hikes, wineries, farm visits and foraging.
“We predict a style of travel will emerge post-pandemic toward slow and grounded travel, where travellers will want to engage with local communities,” Clark said. “Our local experiences are designed to give back to local communities that have been hit hard by both the pandemic and in Australia, the bushfires”.
Wondering what they’ve got? There’s the 4-day Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands Road Trip, the 6-day West Kimberley Adventure and the 5-day New Zealand North Island Hike Bike and Canyon — the latter of which we could be booking sooner than you think if that ‘travel bubble’ works out.
