Festival Bucket List: Burning Man
www.awol.com.au
What: Burning Man is a crucible of creativity, and by no means a regular summer festival. Its name comes from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy of Man which is set alight at the end of the festival.
Where: Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA
When: August 30 to September 7, 2015
Capacity: It’s the desert so technically there is no capacity but ticket sales are capped at around 65,000.
Fun fact: In the first years of Burning Man there were no scheduled performers or artists and there was no distinct camping area or performance space. The only two rules Burners had to abide by were “Don’t interfere with anyone else’s immediate experience” and “No guns in central camp.”
Why should you go? By being apart of Burning Man, you are affectively co-creating Black Rock City, a 360-degree assault on the senses. Your time at Burning Man will be everything from fascinating and enlightening to dirty and dangerous. Then after a week, everything is wiped clean with no trace left. Was it a dream? Was it a nightmare? Was it a truly unique and mesmerising experience? Definitely.
