Here’s Your First Look At Burning Man’s 2018 Temple
A new year brings with it a slew of new festival line-ups and set-ups, and Burning Man is one of the most hotly anticipated on the 2018 calendar.
Taking place in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert from August 26 to September 3, this year’s festival will take the theme of “I, Robot”. And, to get you in the mood, festival organisers have revealed the winning design of its central temple.
[related_articles]9048,1287,52661[/related_articles]Designed by French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani of Mamou-Mani Architects, Galaxia will be built from spiralling timber trusses and will sprawl over almost 60m. Standing just under 20m tall, a “giant 3D-printed mandala” will hang at its centre.
“Galaxia celebrates hope in the unknown, stars, planets, black holes, the movement uniting us in swirling galaxies of dreams,” its designers write. “Galaxia is the ultimate network, the fabric of the universe connecting living beings into one entity.”
It’s an appropriate selection for Burning Man, where almost every part of its so-called Metropolis is created by attendees, who are called citizens. But it’s not Mamou-Mani’s first appearance at the festival – he and colleague Toby Burgess have been bringing installations by Masters of Architecture students at the University of Westminster to Burning Man for several years.
As is custom, Galaxia will be set alight in the festival’s final days.
