If there’s one thing Japan does well, it’s dessert. From giant rainbow fairy floss to treats wrapped in Nicolas Cage‘s face, there’s something for every taste.
Kakigori, shaved ice topped with sweet syrup, condensed milk, ice cream or yoghurt, and fruit, is one of the country’s favourite summertime treats. It’s generally only available in Japan between June to September, when the weather is warm, but, thanks to Devon Café in Surry Hills, Sydneysiders will be able to get their hands on the icy treat for the month of October.
“Kakigori is the perfect way to cool down as Sydney weather starts to get warmer,” Devon Café owner and head chef Zacharay Tan told SBS Food.
The establishment has transformed into a kakigori pop-up shop, with a new flavour on the menu each week.
Taro ABC (shaved butterfly pea flower ice, bubur cha cha, and taro ice cream) and Watermelon/Rose/Strawberry (shaved watermelon ice, rose ice cream, whipped yoghurt and fresh strawberries) are already in the mix, with Mango Lassi (mango ice cream, mango and lychee lassie, fresh mango and whipped yoghurt) on the way for week three. A pineapple and guava variety served in a pineapple boat will round out the month.
Each serving will set you back $14.
