If you’ve ever partied in Japan, chances are you’ve experienced the lemony deliciousness that is Strong Zero. I have not been to Japan, but asking people around the office elicited a lot of excited squeals, so I can assure you it’s a thing.
Yup, Suntory’s number one premixed bevvie in Japan will be making its way permanently Down Under, although it’ll be renamed Minus 196 Double Lemon. Why? Because fans of the drink will be aware that the can is a whopping 9 percent alcohol, which is illegal here. Instead, they’ve changed the percentage to a still very decent 6 percent and therefore had to change the name.
“Aussies who’ve travelled to Japan show a genuine love for one of the country’s biggest and fastest-growing brands -196 ֯C Strong Zero, and we’re excited to launch our very own -196 Double Lemon in Australia,” said Beam Suntory Director of Innovation, Kay Oh.
“We want Aussies to feel like they’re enjoying the real deal straight from the fridge of a convenience store in Tokyo. Unmistakably Japanese, we can’t wait for this next-level refreshment to hit Aussie shelves”.

For those not in the know, the drink is a blend of shochu, vodka, soda and lemon. Not just any lemon though. It’s lemon juice from a whole lemon frozen that’s been frozen in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196°C, which keeps the sourness, sweetness, and aroma of the fruit.
You can grab some for yourself in most major grog retailers from July, and in some independent retailers from June. A four-pack will set you back an RRP of $22, and a 10-pack for RRP $47.
