Sydney’s fondness for yoga has seen downward dogs stretched out in a number of unique locations – there’s yoga from the sky, yoga by the sea and even yoga under the sea – and soon you’ll be able to practice open air yoga on a rooftop while taking in sweeping views of the harbour, including the ol’ “coathanger” (aka The Opera House) and that famed pointy white building adorning every Sydney postcard.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, which rests on the waterfront in Sydney’s Circular Quay, will host weekly free yoga classes in partnership with lululemon athletica over the coming warmer months. The pop up Spring Yoga Series will happen in the peaceful surrounds of the MCA’s rooftop Sculpture Terrace as the sun sets each Thursday from mid-October to the end of January. Each class is a 45-minute session of Vinyasa yoga, which focuses flowing movement and breathing techniques, suitable for all levels of ability.
The yoga sessions are part of the MCA’s late-night program, which sees the museum’s open hours extended into the evening. Once participants have found their inner om and lengthened their limbs, they can chill on the terrace with music from some local DJs, grab a #cleaneating bite at the MCA Cafe or check out an exhibition downstairs at the gallery like Primavera 2015: Young Australian Artists and Matthys Gerber (22 September – 6 December) or MCA Collection, Aleks Danko: MY FELLOW AUS-TRA-ALIENS (until October 18).
The MCA x lululemon Spring Yoga Series will take place at the MCA SCulpture Terrace at 5:30pm-6:15pm from October 15 to January 28 (excluding December 24 and 31). It’s free, but it’s BYO mat and bookings are required at mca.com.au/yoga.
