Vienna Has Taken Melbourne’s ‘Most Liveable City’ Title

Melburnians have proudly worn the badge of “Most Liveable City” for seven years now. But the Economist Intelligence Unit, which rates cities around the world according to their liveability, has shuffled the rankings for 2018, with a new city taking the crown of Most Liveable City: Vienna in Austria.

The two cities have sat right at the top of the rankings for years, but Melbourne has won out so far. Apparently due to Western Europe becoming safer in recent months, and Vienna’s particularly low crime rate helped the Austrian capital secure first place.

Previously the two cities had scored equally well in all measures, except for Melbourne‘s higher ratings in culture and environment.

“A long-running contender to the title, Vienna has succeeded in displacing Melbourne from the top spot due to increases in the Austrian capital’s stability category ratings,” said the EIU in a statement, quoted in The Guardian.

“While in the past couple of years cities in Europe were affected by the spreading perceived threat of terrorism in the region, which caused heightened security measures, the past year has seen a return to normalcy.”

Sydney rose in the rankings from 11th place in 2017 to fifth this year, and Adelaide also ranked highly, landing at number 10 out of 140 ranked cities. Here’s the full list of the top 10 most liveable cities 2018:
