Melbourne And Sydney Have Both Been Named Two Of The World’s Most Liveable Cities
Hey Australia, it’s time to bust out the party hats, because Melbourne has just been named the world’s second-most liveable city. And Sydney’s come in hot at number three in the list of the most liveable cities in The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Index 2019.
This marks Melbourne’s ninth year in the top three, and second year in a row at number two. The city took out the number one spot a whopping seven times between 2010 and 2017 – so we’re happy to give other cities a turn in the top spot. We’re just nice like that.

Melbourne scored 98.4, maxing out healthcare, education and infrastructure.

It also took out the second highest score for culture and environment, behind only Vancouver. No wonder Melbourne’s winning the “war of the musicals” that’s been raging between Australian cities lately.

Sydney came in just behind on 98.1, beating its score from last year that saw it take out fifth place. The EIU says Sydney’s sudden jump is “thanks to an improvement in its culture and environment score, reflecting an increased focus on combating and mitigating the impacts of climate change, as outlined by the city’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030‘ strategy.”
As for first place, that went to Vienna for the second year running with 99.1 out of 100. Those rogues in their most liveable city should be real pleased with themselves right now. Osaka and Calgary rounded out the top five, and Adelaide came in at number ten.
