The 7 Best Things To Do In Adelaide This June

The largest roller derby bout on the planet, opulent dessert feasts and a pedal-powered cross-country camp out – what have you got to say about that, Old Man Winter? Coming off one of the warmest autumn seasons in history, Adelaide is ploughing boldly ahead with a packed calendar of events and activities that defy the impending chill.

Scream and squeal for girls on wheels

Heads will spin and bones will crunch as teams from across Australia and New Zealand go head to head, jammer against jammer, bout for bout in the pursuit of derby glory at The Great Southern Slam. It’s the biggest roller derby event in the WORLD – and it’s all going down at the Adelaide Showgrounds.

It’s three days of high-speed jamming from June 11 to 13. Get pre-sale weekend passes here.

Plan your escape – and not the holiday kind

You and your team are led into a room, handed a crime to solve and left to your own detective devices. You hunt for clues, solve puzzles, bust open locks and work together to solve the case and escape the room… but the clock is ticking!

Escape rooms are seriously good fun and totally nerdy – in only the best ways. The Escape Hunt Adelaide is located in the Adelaide CBD and offers a choice of scenarios to tackle including ‘Murder in the Winery’ (set in the local Barossa Valley), ‘Spy on the Beach’ and ‘Kidnapping at the Zoo’. Lasting for an hour and with success rates of around 30 percent, these rooms can be as challenging as they are fun.

Pedal ‘n’ Pitch

Is there a better way to experience the stunning South Australian Riverland and Adelaide Hills than on two wheels and camping under the stars? We can’t think of one – and if that sounds like your thing then pack your panniers, pump-up your tyres and ride along with Treadly’s 2 Winter // 2 Solstice.

Departing early on June 25, participants will traverse the backroads of the Murray Riverlands out to the small town of Mannum, where they’ll set up camp for the night. After a well-earned rest, the peloton will embark on the homeward trek via Pym Road (just out of Tepko), carving through the stunning Mt. Lofty Ranges, back into Adelaide.

June 19–25 is World Refugee Week

To say Australia has a confused track record with “those who come across the sea” is putting it mildly. World Refugee Week is a chance to reflect upon and revel in the magnificence of multiculturalism. Check out the 60+ events planned for SA alone, exploring issues associated with the refugee crisis across the globe and celebrating the influence of refugees on our local and national culture. Get involved!

Immigration and refugee policies are set to be among the most polarising issues for Aussies heading to the polls on July 2. This is an ideal opportunity to get some critical info before casting your vote.

Be warned: there are no bookings for this event. Come early and come hungry. Devour Cafe Patisserie owner and chef Quang Nguyen has quite the cult following for serving-up the most outrageously tasty sweet treats. His regular dessert nights take the form of degustations spanning several courses and always pull a crowd. They’re epic affairs, not for the faint of heart or modest of appetite. Two nights are scheduled – June 3 and 4, both at 7pm.

Support jazz for a cause

Join lovers of local jazz, blues, roots and classical music as broadcaster 5MBS throw their annual membership fundraiser. Hosted in the station’s courtyard on Sunday June 5, there’ll be live tunes from Charmaine Jones and the Leading Ladies of Jazz, food and coffee plus a CD and vinyl sale.

A $5 cover charge gets you in and all proceeds go towards maintaining the station, which is 100% volunteer-operated. 5MBS HQ is located in Hindmarsh, just a few stops from the CBD, amid a bunch of great brunch cafes and cosy pubs.

Get some Culture (Club)

culture

In 1984, Culture Club almost skipped SA entirely on their Australian tour (Did They Really Want to Hurt [Us]?) but local fanatic Pennyanne Garner and radio DJ Greg Clark weren’t having it. The pair got in the ear of one Molly Meldrum, who picked up the blower to the band’s management to plead the state’s case. The result was an appearance in Rundle Mall that drew a modest 25,000 screaming fans. Culture Club played a handful of hits and promised they’d return some day…

Now George and the boys are back – and they’re kicking off their world tour at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on June 6. No doubt their eager to earn back some good Karma (Chameleon).
