The NSW Government Is Giving Away Free Trees To 33 Areas Around Sydney

There were two types of people during lockdown: the ones who adopted pets and the ones who adopted plants. Both of them started baking sourdough.

For the plant parents (at lease, for those living in New South Wales), there’s some good news. The NSW Government wants to help your plant obsession by giving away free trees to a bunch of suburbs and areas around Sydney.

Why?

This free initiative is part of their wider project to plant one million trees in Greater Sydney by 2022. The purpose of which is to bring more shade and cleaner air to the city.

The trees will be sourced from IndigiGrow — the new venture from Indigenous-owned business First Hand Solutions, which aims to achieve sustainability through native plants.

The catch, of course, is that you’ll have to be living in one of these 33 local government areas:

Bayside
Blacktown
Blue Mountains
Burwood
Camden
Campbelltown
Canada Bay
Canterbury-Bankstown
Cumberland
Fairfield
Georges River
Hawkesbury
Hornsby
Hunters Hill
Inner West
Ku-Ring-Gai
Lane Cove
Liverpool
Mosman
North Sydney
Northern Beaches
Parramatta
Penrith
Randwick
Ryde
Strathfield
Sutherland
Sydney
The Hills
Waverly
Willoughby
Wollondilly
Woollahra

I suppose the other catch is that these are trees, not the indoor plants you have in pot plants all over your house, so you’ll probably need a spare piece of backyard — or even just a backyard, considering this is Sydney.

If you are in one of these neighbourhoods and have the space though, you can sign on up for your free tree right here. Applications are open from March until May, and you ca pick up your tree directly from IndigiGrow at La Perouse Public School.

If you missed out this round, there’ll be another chance in June. So prepare your soil, maybe. In the meantime, if you would like this all explained to you inn cheesy video form, have at it:
