This Hidden Waterfall Has To Be One Of Australia’s Best Swimming Spots

Southern Rockhole, Nitmiluk National Park

It’s a big call, we know, but we reckon we’ve found the most picturesque spot for a swim in the whole country – and we live in a big country.

Say g’day to the wildly photogenic Southern Rockhole in Nitmiluk National Park in the Northern Territory.

You’re already aware of how great the NT’s collection of natural swimming holes is, of course. The Territory has somehow found itself as the world’s unofficial capital of natural plunge pools.

But, among all those beautiful rock pools is one of Darwin’s best kept secrets – and a reminder that the NT is anything but as dry and sparse.

The Southern Rockhole is in Nitmiluk National Park, about a three-and-a-half-hour drive south of Darwin, right near Katherine. While getting to this spot does require a bit of bush-bashing, the beautiful turquoise waters are your welcome reward.

It’ll take you about an hour and a half to get to the falls from the Nitmiluk Visitors Information Centre, but there’s a strong chance that you’ll have the falls all to yourself when you arrive.

The best time to visit is from December to February, right after some heavy rains have fallen and when the waterfall will be thundering.
