Sydney’s Newest Library Is An Underground Architectural Marvel

Green Square Library

The greatest place to settle in with a good book is in a quiet place far, far away from anyone and anything, so why has it taken Sydney this long to finally create the ultimate reading nook – an underground library?

Our prayers have been answered with the opening of Sydney’s first underground reading space at Green Square Library.

Green Square, made up of inner-south suburbs Beaconsfield, Zetland, and parts of Alexandria, Waterloo and Rosebery is well on track to being Sydney’s most densely populated suburb, making the location for the new library a no-brainer.

The truly stunning subterranean-designed space owes its beauty to architecture studio Stewart Hollenstein, in partnership with Stewart Architecture, both of which collaborated on the beautiful design.

“We looked at how we could embed the library in the plaza, while making the building both an architectural and public space,” architect Felicity Stewart told Broadsheet.

The final product is a super modern space for everyone. There’s a reading room, computer lab kitted out with a 3D printer, a music room with a grand piano and recording gear, and a conference space.

Then, below street level is where the library exists, and bookshelves line every wall, fully encompassing visitors in literature. And though it’s below ground level, the space receives a bunch of natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the plaza’s gardens.
