This Photographer Is On A Mission To Capture The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries

Architectural beauty often pops up in the most unexpected and often overlooked locations. So, next time you’re loaning a novel, take a moment to look around — you might just spot something magnificent.

Reinhard Görner is a German photographer who, for the last 10 years, has been capturing the magnificence of libraries across the globe, making a name for himself within his field.

“I was fascinated by the architectural features of modern libraries,” Görner told AWOL. “I first photographed the Library of the Philological Department of Freie University, Berlin, and was fascinated by the idea behind it.”

One scroll through Görner’s online portfolio shows the extent of his work. And he has no intention of slowing down, with other locations already on his to-capture list. “There are many great libraries I am still waiting to capture, like Beijing Public Library, Helsinki Central Library, or Copenhagen Main Library in Denmark”.

When asked which location was his favourite so far, he noted St Peter’s Abbey  in Salzburg, Austria.

“That’s a very special place,” he says. “The library was built into the former cells of the monks”.

“It is quite small and shows an intimate beauty you don’t find in larger halls, like Austrian Baroque Libraries.”
