Festival Bucket List: Lake Of Stars Festival, Malawi

What: Embrace art and culture in the warm heart of Africa at Malawi’s Lake of Stars Festival. It’s the best setting to hear from some of the world’s best grassroots performers, and some talented up-and-comers from around Malawi and its surrounding regions.

Where: At Sunbird Nkopola Lodge, Mangochi on the shores of Lake Malawi in Africa’s south-east.

When: Annually on the last week of September. This year festivities will kick off on the 25th and run through to Sunday the 27th of September.

Fun fact: The majority of staff are volunteers and the festival works to bring tourism to Malawi and give back to the nearby villages with support from several charity sponsors.

Why should you go? Lake of Stars are humble in their approach, but broad in their reach. Apart from the great live performances, the festival also features film screenings, art exhibitions and some great TED-style talks. The festival is slowly building a name for itself as the best arts and cultural festival in Africa. Lake of Stars is friendly, fun and laid-back – perfect if you want to get off the grid for a little while.
