5 Of Australia’s Best Cosy Bars For An Autumn Tipple

Let’s face it: Autumn is your last ditch effort to get out of the house before winter descends and transforms you into a Netflix-binging, uber-eats-ordering doona burrito.

We’ve gone ahead and collated the cosiest bars in the country for you to check out while the weather gets cooler and the level of wanting to do things becomes smaller. Plus, all these picks are smaller bars with secret entrances, making it much more difficult for the outside world to find you. You’re welcome.

Where: 77/79 George St, The Rocks

The Doss House is an intimate, heritage underground bar was built in the 1840s and has a rich history of quirky tenants. These days it’s a cosy place to grab a drink and chill on vintage-looking leather couches while the fireplace roars.

#2 Murmur, Melbourne

Where: 17 Warburton Lane, Melbourne

A sizeable drinks menu, a welcoming atmosphere and comfortable furniture are all you really need in a cosy bar. Lucky for Melbourne city dwellers, Murmur has all of these things soundtracked by killer rock, blues and jazz. Add one of their signature maple Old Fashioneds to the mix for an extremely homey night out.

#3 Can You Keep A Secret?, Brisbane

Where: 619-621 Stanley Street, Woolloongabba, QLD

If your idea of cosy is your Great Aunt’s house (cushy velvet armchairs, kitschy figurines, landscape paintings from the 80s) Can You Keep A Secret? Lounge Bar in Brisbane is your jam. It feels so welcoming, it’s like you’re entering somewhere you’ve already been a thousand times before. They also double as a vintage boutique, stocking high quality vintage garments from around Australia for you to buy. No pretense, great clothes, delicious drinks.

#4 Maybe Mae, Adelaide

Where: 15 Peel Street, Adelaide CBD

Maybe Mae is an Old Hollywood inspired hideaway just as irresistible and alluring as its namesake, the iconic actress Mae West. Settle in to a dark green leather booth with a fresh cocktail and let the art deco of the roaring 20s step you back in time. It’s so good even Dev Patel rates it.

#5 Wolf Lane, Perth

Where: Rear 321 Murray St, Perth

Much like Can You Keep A Secret?, Wolf Lane has the same vibes of an old relative’s home but it’s more like the home of a relative who has travelled the world a few times over and has lots of wild stories to tell. Grab a classic cocktail, settle in on the couch and listen in.
