A Replica ‘Lord Of The Rings’ City Might Be Built In The UK

Crowd-funding is truly shaping a better world for us. A carry-all jacket with 15 pockets? Crowd-funded! A hot-tub hammock mash-up? Crowd-funded! But now comes one of the most ambitious crowd-funded campaigns of all time.

A bunch of architects want to build J. R. R. Tolkien’s fictional city of Minas Tirith from the Lord of The Rings series.

Minas Tirith in all it’s CGI glory

You may remember Minas Tirith from the Battle of the Pelennor Fields – the major centrepiece for Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King. The indiegogo campaign – titled Realise Minas Tirith – notes the architects are passionate about creating a “beautiful, inspirational and fully-functioning replica of Peter Jackson’s depiction of Minas Tirith” from his highly successful films.

There will be residential and commercial properties, and designers are looking at two locations in picturesque Southern England. Work would commence in 2016 and is estimated to be completed in 2023.

The one big catch is – it’ll cost about 1.8 billion pounds (that’s $4 billion Aussie dollars).

While the designers know their goal is a little ambitious, they’re offering some sweet deals for those who decide to contribute – £15 gets your name on a large stone monument, £75 gets you three strands of Galadriel’s silver-gold hair (does Cate Blanchett know about this!?), £900 gets you a night for two at Minas Tirith and for a whopping £100,000 donation, you get to be the Lordship or Ladyship of the city. No big deal.

As of publication, the donations have reached £82,000, which is pretty damn impressive. If you’re in need of a change of scenery and think the towering tiers of Minas Tirith seem like a nice place to live, go ahead and be apart of history. Also, if you’re sort of beside yourself regarding all of this, a note on the crowdfunding website says, “Please only donate within your means, and in the knowledge that this project is a light-hearted venture with virtually no chance of succeeding.” Still, fun but.
