A Free Japan-Inspired Gelato Food Truck Is Popping Up In Melbourne

As a destination, Japan has so many drawcards – its futuristic metropolises, its incredible nature, and its animal cafes, to name a few – but the one we keep coming back to is its food.

Boasting freshness of ingredients and flavours that don’t exist elsewhere, the unique culinary profile of Japan’s cuisine alone is enough to make you want to jump on the next flight to Tokyo with an empty stomach and a pocketful of Yen. But if you’re in Melbourne over the next few weekends, you can sample some of those flavours a little closer to home (and probably end up even more inspired to get your tastebuds to Japan stat, let’s be real).

Qantas has recently launched direct daily flights from Melbourne to Tokyo Narita Airport, and to celebrate they’ve teamed up with the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) to bring the flavours of Japan to the streets of Melbourne in the form of a gelato pop up truck. The Taste of Japan Yummy Fun Truck will be scooping out free servings of Japan-inspired ice cream, created by the geniuses from Gelato Messina, over four weekends in and around Melbourne’s CBD.

There will be eight unique flavours to try – with four different ones on offer each weekend – all of which were inspired by fans of Japan who were asked by JNTO last year to share their experiences, memories and stories from the country. Gelato Messina then used these insights to develop the unusual flavour combos (with even better names), from the Wasa-Berri (strawberry and wasabi sorbet), to the Matcha Mistachio (matcha gelato with pistachio milk chocolate fudge), to the Yummi Umami (caramel miso gelato with chewy caramel).

Yes, we got this delivered to our office. Yes, it was seriously delicious.

And if the promise of free ice cream isn’t enough, there’s also this: the Taste of Japan Yummy Fun Truck is hosting a Japan-inspired game show experience, giving you the chance to win one of five holidays for two to Japan with Qantas. To win, you have to take your chances at the Yummy Fun Truck vending machine on site.

The truck will visit multiple locations in Melbourne over the next four weekends, including Southern Cross Station (Sunday February 19 and Sunday February 26), the Urban Amphitheatre Federation Square (Saturday February 25), the St Kilda Foreshore (the weekend of March 4 and 5), and Queensbridge Square (the weekend of March 11 and 12).
