These Are The World’s Cheapest Capital Cities To Visit

When it comes to travelling, it’s pretty safe to assume that if you’re staying in a capital city, you’re going to end up paying more. Unfortunately, this also tends to be where many of the major landmarks and best things to do are located, so it’s a tradeoff many of us are forced to make. But staying in cultural hubs doesn’t necessarily have to cost an arm and leg. Tour company Cuba Holidays has crunched the numbers and determined the cheapest capital cities to visit around the world – as well as the most expensive.

The report analyses various factors, including hotel rates, cheapest transport options, average cost of a meal for two, entry fees to city attractions, price of a pint and cost of a coffee. Coming in the top spot was Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital city.

While it’s less of a tourist hotspot than nearby island Bali, it’s a fascinating place to visit due to its mix of cultural influences, including Javanese, Malay, Chinese, Arab, Indian and European. With a daily living cost of AU$30 Jakarta is 47% cheaper than the next cheapest option Skopje (capital of Macedonia) and 1450% cheaper than the most expensive city Abu Dhabi at AU$475 per day.

Colombo in Sri Lanka, Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan and Bogota in Colombia make up the rest of the top five cheapest capital cities. Meanwhile, Reykjavik in Iceland, Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Dublin in Ireland and Copenhagen in Denmark all made the top five of the most expensive city to visit. Our own capital, Canberra, came in at number 80 – ironically, it’s probably one of the more affordable places to visit in Australia.
