5 Things You’ve Got To Do In Canberra, According To Peking Duk

Split Milk Festival will bring the best in delicious street food and drink, cutting edge music and experimental art and culture to Canberra on Saturday November 17.

The 2018 lineup is one of the most anticipated of the festival season with Childish Gambino, Peking Duk, RL Grime, Thandi Phoenix, The Wombats, Thundamentals, and a whole slew of other amazing Aussie acts on the bill (this could explain why it sold out so quickly).

In anticipation for the stellar festival, we got some ace Canberra tips from a former local. Below, Reuben from Peking Duk gives us intel into what you can’t miss in the nation’s capital, and probably some inspo on where to hang pre- and post-Spilt Milk.

Check out Canberra from the sky. Either go skydiving where you land at The Mint, or jump in the hot air balloons at dawn with the champagne breakfast. Despite what everyone says, Canberra is actually a beautiful place and it’s best seen from the sky.

The city is 90 percent trees and, in autumn especially, it’s sexy as. If hot air balloons and skydiving are out of your budget, just cruise through the suburban streets and soak up the green leafy vibes dominating your windscreen vision.

Eat The Best Damn Laksa Around

Get a laksa at Dickson Asian Noodle House. This is definitely the part about Canberra I miss the most. Laksa is simply not as good anywhere else.

Get A Burger In Ya!

Go to Brodburger on Kingston Foreshore. Yeah I just said two food activities in a row, but it’s entirely warranted. Brodburger is one of the best burgers on the planet, and we eat a tonne of them. Throughout our American travels, we’ve grown a huge appreciation and love for burgers of all shapes and forms.

Brodburger should be internationally recognised and every visitor to Canberra should give it a red hot crack. Hot tip – order in advance online as the wait can be long.

Ain’t No Party Like A Canberra Party

Have a stupidly large night out. Start in Manuka and Kingston around sunset with some beers or vino and a cocktail, maybe grab a feed too. Then head to a pub in Civic or Braddon and kick it ’til the clubs open. Every club is fun, but you need to pop into Mr Wolf if you wanna clown it hard.

The cocktail bars get wild later on too; our faves are Honkytonks, Hippo and Knightsbridge Penthouse. Mingle with locals that look rad and go with them to an after party kick on ’til sunrise. Once again, autumn is the best time for everything. One solid sunset to sunrise stint is a great way to soak up Canberra’s essence and culture!

The Perfect Saturday

Saving the best for last; if you’re in Canberra around springtime, a typically perfect yet sober Saturday would start at the Capital Region Farmers’ Markets around 8am, where you can smash the freshest and best of everything around our region. You’ve absolutely got to get stuck into the dutch ‘Stikkie Bikkies’ from Henny and then possibly the best fresh roasted coffee beans on earth from Quentin at the Jindebah stall. Wander ’round, enjoy it and spend up ’cause it’s rare and decent.

Once your morning at the farmers’ market is exhausted, head straight to Floriade in Commonwealth Park, right by Lake Burley Griffin (though this has been and gone for the year). In springtime, Floriade is the largest flower exhibition in the southern hemisphere, and it always has huge live acts and rad food. Once you’ve seen enough flowers, walk 200 metres south and do the bridge to bridge walk on Lake Burley Griffin.

Hopefully it’s sunset by now and you’re soaking up the nicest of Canberra’s views. You’ll pass Blundells Cottage, the National Carillon, the National Gallery of Australia including its sculpture garden, and lastly the National Library, which looks incredibly dope at night. From here you’ll be buggered, but head to Westside Acton Park and get in on the food truck action!

Canberra’s Spilt Milk Festival, featuring Peking Duk, Childish Gambino, and more, is taking place at Commonwealth Park on November 17. Tickets are well and truly sold out, but you can join a waitlist here.
