5 Of The Best Castles On Airbnb

You can’t deny it – it’s every little kids dream to live in a fairytale castle. But for the vast majority of us who didn’t grow up in the English countryside, the reality of living in an old-fashioned castle seemed just that little bit further away. Luckily for us, those dreams could soon become a reality thanks to Airbnb. Castles are popping up left, right and centre on the home sharing site (right next to the weird otherworldly homes that look like something out of Star Wars). In celebration we’ve collected five of the best castles that you can totally stay in IRL. Go on, live out that childhood fantasy.

#1 A classic English castle

We’ll begin with a classic – this stunner is found in Kirkby Stephen, a small township in Cumbria in the north-west of England. You’ll be staying in the owner’s amazing family home that includes all the fixings for a truly authentic 18th-Century castle: turrets, tudor panelling, gothic windows – oh, and there’s even WiFi.

#2 A fancy manor house in southern France

Le Manoir Equivocal is possibly the prettiest French castle we’ve come across and, for lack of a better word, it’s so quintessentially French. Staying at this pink tinted stone caste will surely bring you back to a more peaceful (albeit war-riddled) time when it was constructed, way back in the 15th century. It sits on a huge farmyard with rows and rows of crops in the surrounding fields – you’ll enjoy the majestic panoramas that show off the Burgundy vineyards and Mont Blanc in the east. This is surely heaven.

#3 Your very own tower of London Bangor

Now we’re talking – this enchanting three storey stone tower is what medieval dreams are made of. Helen’s Tower is nestled deep in the woods of the Clandeboye Estate in Ireland, and there’s dozens of ancient poems written about it, according to it’s Airbnb description. There’s an octagonal period room, a steep spiral staircase and a rooftop reading room. It’ll be hard to ever leave this one.

#4 The perfect spot for your next destination wedding

This place is called – wait for it – Château La Commanderie de Plaigne, so you know it’s a pretty legit French castle. Found in the southern French state of Languedoc-Roussillon, this chateau has 10 bedrooms and a huge outdoor reception area. Perfect for that fancy destination wedding you’re dreaming about. There’s even a private outdoor pool in the surrounding four acres of parkland the building sits on. So frenchy, so chic.

#5 Pretend you’re in Downton Abbey at the Craster Tower

The historic Craster Tower has been passed town through the same family for over 800 years, so we’re pretty lucky someone decided to pop it up on Airbnb to share with the world. Like stepping right into the Yorkshire countryside on British drama Downton Abbey, you’ll almost feel like you’ve joined the aristocratic Crawley family for a week or so here at the castle. Found in the northern county of Northumberland in England, the Craster Tower feels remarkably authentic – there’s even a Venetian chandelier in the drawing room, so it’s possibly the best spot to try out that posh British accent you’ve perfected.
