Watching a sunset at Coffee Bay

There is a South African tradition of drinking a sundowner with your mates, and there is literally no place more beautiful in the whole country – if not the world – to watch the sun set with a drink in hand than Coffee Bay. Coffee Bay is a small rural village situated on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located about 250 kilometres south of Durban and has a population of just 258 people. Watching the sun set, with rolling green hills behind you and a stunning stretch of ocean as far as the eye can see in front of you, is something that won’t leave you anytime soon.

Downing a springbokkie

South Africa’s national shot is called a ‘Springbokkie’, which means little springbok. The drink is made of a combination of creme de menthe and Amarula, a creamy South African liquer similar to Baileys. The drink is named as the green and browny-gold layers resemble the jersies of the South Africa national rugby union team ‘The Springboks’, and the drink balances hints of caramel with a strong hit of mint. You can’t leave the country without saying you’ve tried one.

The world’s highest bridge bungee jump

If you’re going to bungee jump, it’s go big or go home. South Africa is getting a name around town as being the adventure capital of the world. It’s true; you can get up to some risky business from swimming with great whites, to kayaking with crocodiles, to paragliding off Table Mountain, but it doesn’t get anymore adventurous than chucking your body 216 metres off the Bloukrans Bridge. Situated close to Plettenberg Bay, the view from Africa’s highest bridge captures all the majesty and tranquility of the Bloukrans River valley, but let’s be honest: you’re not bungee jumping for the tranquility.
