The 10 Most Incredible Pools Of All Time. Ever.

Winter may be coming down-under but it’s always Summer O’Clock somewhere. If you want to ditch the seasonal chill for warmer climes and party times, dive into this list of the world’s most amazing pools.

#1 The San Alfonso del Mar Seawater Pool in Algarrobo, Chile

They say size doesn’t matter, but you can decide that for yourself. The San Alfonso del Mar Seawater Pool in Algarrobo, Chile, is the world’s largest swimming pool. Clocking in at over a kilometre in length, it stretches for 20 acres and has a maximum depth of 3.5m. It holds about 250 million litres of filtered and treated seawater, pumped in “pacifically” for the purpose, from the ocean of the same name.

#2 Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, USA

Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel and Casino has a tropical pool situation straight outta Kokomo. With three different poolside scenes to experience, stroll from the serene Nirvana – featuring its own beach dotted with daybeds, cabanas, a bar, grill and swim-up blackjack – to a sophisticated escape at the private Breathe pool, offering views of the famous Vegas strip. Revel in the ultimate Sin City experience at Paradise Beach, where you’ll find the raucous “REHAB” pool parties – memorable (or not) for more than its misleading moniker.

#3 St. Regis Lhasa Resort Gold Energy Pool in Lhasa, Tibet

Most people aren’t aware that in 1983, when Spandau Ballet famously declared “you are GOLD,” they were in fact addressing the five star St. Regis Lhasa Resort Gold Energy Pool in Tibet. That’s because I made it up just then. But I kid you not when I say this bejewelled beauty shimmers with the reflections of 24-karat gold leaves secured with crystals to submerged tiles, in an architectural feat that even Kanye would priase. At a constant temperature of 28-32°C, this oasis also offers spectacular views of the resort’s lake and the Himalaya Palace for added ambience.

#4 Jumeirah Dhevanafushi Resort in the Maldives

This starry-lit pool sits in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Secretly nestled across two islands in the southern Maldives, the hideaway Jumeirah Dhevanafushi Resort sports rich foliage, glistening beaches and sapphire blue waters. But the jewel in its crown is the twinkling depth of this mesmerising above-ground wonder.

#5 Sanctuary Swala Camp in Tanzania, Africa

In a secluded area of Tarangire National Park, this pool overlooks a natural Tanzanian waterhole from the comfort of Sanctuary Swala Camp. Everything the light touches belongs to majestic African wildlife, and adventurers have spotted elephants, giraffes, zebras, impalas and lions drinking from the nearby waterhole daily.

#6 Giola Lagoon in Thassos, The Greek Islands

Carved into a sea-facing rock-wall by the hands of time, this natural pool near the village of Astris, on Thassos, is filled with the waters of the Aegean Sea and warmed by the glorious Greek sun. Steeped in myth and legend, the lagoon is said to be the eye of Zeus, who created Giola for Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love. Although it’s only accessible by foot, and requires a considerable trek, this emerald expanse is truly a gift from the gods.

#7 The Cambrian in Abelboden, Switzerland

It’s not all cabana wear and cocktails in countries that are just too cool for pool. Situated within the pristine Swiss Alps, The Cambrian features an outdoor hot pool that looks upon a snow-capped Alpine panorama. Immersing in the heated hydrotherapy pool while snow falls around you is said to holistically soothe the mind, body and spirit. For a more invigorating experience, there’s an indoor lap pool fed by a wall-to-wall waterfall.

Let the forces of nature energise you in the heart of an Icelandic icescape. About 45 minutes’ drive southwest of Reykjavik City, this spa is located in a lava field. Rich minerals like silica and sulfur deposited deep underground are pushed up into the pool by a nearby geothermal power plant. This gives the water its milky-blue hue and purported healing powers.
