That Dog Surfing Competition Happened & It Was Glorious

While it might sound like a spin off of Air Bud (that movie where a dog has the uncanny ability to play basketball), dog surfing is actually a legitimate hobby that involves placing your pooch on a surfboard and watching them hang 20 as they shred sick all the way to shore. Or thereabouts.

Dog surfing is so popular that Huntington Beach in Southern California hosts an annual competition called Surf City Surf Dog each September to raise money for dog-centric charities. The esteemed and sickeningly adorable event took place this past weekend, and the photos really speak for themselves.

Dogs donned miniature life vests as they competed in separate weight classes (in the name of fairness), with all dogs receiving a medal of ‘pawticipation’ for their efforts. The weekend long event also had doga (dog yoga), a ‘yappy’ hour and a dog fashion show.

The event’s home, Huntington Beach, is a bit of a mecca for dog-lovers, known for its canine-friendly resorts, hotels and restaurants. It’s even been called “DogTown USA” by the delightfully titled Dog Fancy Magazine.
