You Can Stay In This Very Cool Airbnb At The Bottom Of An Active Volcano

These days, an Airbnb is more than just a place to rest our heads. We want them situated in an interesting location, made out of sustainable materials or just be a straight-up treehouse. And thankfully, there’s an Airbnb in Hawaii that ticks at least two of those three boxes. Ask and you shall receive.
Airbnb’s listing The Phoenix House is located in Kalapana on Hawaii Island, at the base of Kilauea. In case you weren’t aware, Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano and the Airbnb is built on top of actual lava. It hasn’t erupted since 1984, though, so you can probably sleep easily… Or, you know, with one eye open.
The aptly named Phoenix House is a one bedroom loft apartment with a kitchen, lounge area, double bed, bathroom and seriously unique views. Through the large panoramic windows, you can see fields of lava as far as the eye can see and large tufts of smoke billowing from Kilauea. At night, you get to enjoy some serious starry skies too.
The design and development are environmentally friendly too, with designer Will Beilharz specifically keeping the natural surroundings in mind.
The owners built the retreat as a place for guests to contemplate and relax. But we’ll see how well we can relax with a heaving, spluttery volcano six kilometres from our bed.
Prices at the retreat start at $200AUD per night. You can check out the listing and book here.
