The World’s Biggest Airport Is Coming To Beijing

China has the biggest population of any country in the world, so it only makes sense that its facilities are large enough to cater to those numbers. A new airport is coming to Beijing in 2019, and it’s going to be the largest airport in the entire world.

The Beijing New Airport – Beijing’s second, after the Capital International Airport – was designed by late architect Zaha Hadid. It’s expected to feature some really interesting, innovative design aspects. For instance, the 700,000 square metre terminal will feature a hub with six ‘spikes’, or walkways that connect to other points around the terminal.

Innovative design features within the new 700,000 square-meter terminal will include a central hub with six curved spikes with walkways that connect to one point to make navigating the terminal easier.

The airport will be the world’s largest in terms of surface area. The upgrade is reportedly long overdue, given the ever-increasing air traffic in and out of Beijing and its surrounds.

The initial phase of the airport will see four new runways, and will be able to accomodate for 45 million passengers each year. Following this, the next stages of construction will eventually lead to an airport that accommodates up to 100 million people, which is about the same as Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. Hartsfield-Jackson is the world’s busiest, with around 104 million people passing through each year.
