The Queensland Government has announced a new ‘Work In Paradise’ initiative to lure workers to regional Queensland’s blossoming tourism sector.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the pandemic, the Sunshine State is bouncing back with domestic tourism starting to soar. But the whole comeback thing can’t really happen without workers to facilitate the upswing.

The ‘Work in Paradise‘ campaign from the Queensland Government is a $7.5m package designed to help lure workers to fill about 4,000 roles across regional areas, at a time when travel and hospitality operators are desperate for the staff.

Kicking off from July 1, job seekers would be offered a $1,500 incentive to relocate, as well as $250 in travel vouchers and accommodation supplements in the year-long ‘Work in Paradise’ scheme.

The incentives will be on offer for jobs in a region stretching north from Mackay as well as inland regions west of Toowoomba. This includes the Whitsundays, Cairns, the world-famous Great Barrier Reef and the vastly beautiful Outback.

The roles needed are many and varied, from chefs, bartenders and deckhands to tour guides. So if office work isn’t for you, this could be just the thing for a pretty special next chapter.

It’s been reported that The Whitsundays, for example, has a bumper winter season ahead – the biggest in the last decade – thanks to previous incentives driving Aussies to pick up the slack left by the drop in international tourism.

But here’s the thing: bigger hotels and resorts are struggling to find workers and have had to limit bookings at a time when they could be recouping their losses. They’re particularly strapped for housekeeping and frontline service roles.

“We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world,” says Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. “This campaign will give Queenslanders and other Australians even more reasons to come to work in paradise.”

“Grab your friends and take a tourism job to work in paradise – that’s the message we’re sending to thousands of Queensland and Australian jobseekers,” Palaszczuk adds.
