Hidden deep in the Madikwe Game Reserve just west of Johannesburg is the Sanctuary Makanyane Safari Lodge – probably the only place in the world where waking up next to a passing elephant is pretty regular stuff.
Here at the lodge, guests stay in rooms overlooking the malaria-free Madikwe reserve, which is home to lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos. You can expect to play a lot of animal eye-spy while you’re staying at the lodge – the biggest get of them all is the elusive black rhino, so it’s 1000 points to you if you spot one.[media_embed]https://youtu.be/OKj334mOLDw[/media_embed]
The Sanctuary Makanyane includes eight super stylish suites which are dotted along the Marico River, including the lodge’s iconic second storey sleeping deck – here you’re given the unique opportunity to spend the night under the African sky surrounded by lanterns, a fly net and the enormous bushland with all its wildlife. Pretty sweet, huh?
