It’s taken us a little while, but the tiny house movement is finally making its mark Down Under, and it’s affecting the way we travel in our own backyard in the best way.
[related_articles]64390,67136,66357[/related_articles]Inspired by the concept of being set free, Unyoked is a home-grown start-up founded by twin brothers Chris and Cam Grant and developed in partnership with designer Alice Nivison and eco-consultant Rochie Northcott.
Named Miguel and Heike after intrepid travellers and laidback members of the Unyoked community, the first two tiny properties are located in the picturesque NSW Southern Highlands – less than two hours’ drive from Sydney — and are the perfect getaway for people seeking a short escape from the city without all the forward-planning, manual labour and burnt food that comes with camping.
To reach Miguel, visitors face dirt roads and a 200m walk through the rainforest, while Heike is suitable for the slightly less intrepid. While we know Miguel is situated on a 300-acre property and Heike borders a national park, their actual locations are kept secret until a few days before guests are due to arrive.
[related_articles]64894,63987[/related_articles]Fortunately, fresh bedding, towels, a hot shower and even toilet paper are supplied, so the hard work is done, while a solar-powered bar fridge, composting toilet, fire pit are all part of the deal.
Most importantly, there’s no wi-fi.
If you’re keen to get in on – or check out of – the action, you best exercise some patience. These Tiny Houses can be mighty popular and often book out far in advance. Fortunately though, thanks to the popularity of Unyoked’s debut properties, more sites have been popping up around Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Unyoked has now grown to 15 cabins, with six near Sydney, eight near Melbourne and even one in Brisbane, with further expansion set to hit 2020. Bookings cost $190 per night, with minimum two-night bookings required on Fridays and Saturdays. Late check-outs are standard so guests can make the most of the quiet surrounds.
What hasn’t changed is the care put into selecting each location. Every property must be secluded — we’re talking no sights or sounds of anything human-made — yet still be no more than a two-hour drive from their respective city’s CBD.
