This Is Officially Australia’s Best Beach And You’ve Probably Never Heard Of It

Australia's Best Beach

The title of Australia’s best beach is a hard one to come by, especially as we’re consistently praised for having some of the best in the world. But a new contender has just swept Bondi, Whitehaven Beach in the Whitesundays and Tassie’s Wineglass Bay straight out of the water.

Funnily enough, Australia’s best beach isn’t found on the mainland – nor on one of our favourite local islands. It’s actually found in the Indian Ocean, 2750 kilometres north-west of Perth, approximately midway between Australia and Sri Lanka in the Cocos Keeling Islands. You’d be forgiven for not knowing this collection of coral islands was a part of Australia’s territory – but after spying its coastline, it’s you’ll probably never forget.

Welcome to Australia’s most remote beach escape, Cossies Beach.

Cossies beach is located on Direction Island, one of the 27 coral islands that make up the Cocos Keeling Islands. The beach was awarded the coveted title by beach expert and Tourism Australia Aquatic and Coastal Ambassador (dream job alert!) Brad Farmer. Mr Farmer and his colleague Professor Andy Short have spent the past five months compiling the latest edition of Australia’s Best Beaches for 2017, and have named Cossies Beach “as near to perfect as a beach can be”.

And it isn’t hard to see why. Cossies is flanked by white sand, unspoilt turquoise water and spectacular sea life – it even boasts a wi-fi hotspot so you can Instagram your enviable experience and make all your mates back home extremely jealous.

The Cocos Keeling Islands are made up of two reef atolls and 27 coral islands, of which only two are populated. The area has become quite a hotspot for water and nature activities including kite surfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, fishing and bird watching. Or, you know, you could just park yourself on Australia’s best beach and call it a day.
